003 Memorize The Bible With Me – Salvation Is Not A Reward – Ephesians 2:8-10

by Dan Horner on January 15, 2012

It was easy to decide which set of verses I wanted to memorize
this week.

I was talking with someone I have only met a couple of times before.  Let’s just call her Jan since what she talked about was kind of personal.

She loves Jesus and wants to reflect Him in her life.  But like all of us feels as though she just doesn’t measure up all the time.  She even said that sometimes she wonders if she really is saved at all.  That broke my heart.

Her emotions were letting her down!

I wanted to show her that her salvation isn’t a function of how “good” she is on any given day.  But here’s the problem – I couldn’t remember where in the Bible this was explained.  Not good (because I wanted to help her out.)

Lucky for me, at least I remembered that I thought the verse might be somewhere in the letter the Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians.  (But honestly, I wasn’t sure.)

I literally read out loud to Jan.  I read all of chapter 1 and into chapter 2 before I finally found the verses I was looking for!  Now I’m sure it was helpful, but how much better if I had known where such a key piece of scripture was located.

That’s why this week I want to set the memory verse to Ephesians 2:8-10.  It’s a fantastic truth that Paul explained centuries ago, but I want to make sure I have it a little more handy in the future.

Salvation is not a Reward!

“God saved you by his grace when you believed.
And you can’t take credit for this;
it is a gift from God.

Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done,
so none of us can boast about it.

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus,
so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Ephesians 2:8-10

Notice at the end:  Good works are the result, not the cause of Salvation.

There is just something in all of us that wants to earn our way to God.  That’s a heavy burden.  These 3 verses really close the door on that predisposition.  “Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done…”
