Sounds a little weird doesn’t it?

I think we understand that we want to follow Christ.  I think we can make sense of:  Jesus died for my sins and now I’m right before God.

But what’s all this “Holy Spirit” stuff?

Jesus said he would help us in a new way once he left

He said he would send us the Holy Spirit, and described Him as the Paraklete or One called alongside to help.

The Holy Spirit is the One who is working in the world today.

The Holy Spirit gives us strength.  He changes our lives.  He is our provider.  He is the One preparing all of us as believers for our presentation as the Bride of Christ.

He is not an “it” – He is part of the Godhead

We can have relationship with the Holy Spirit.  We can, if you will, be under His influence at all times.

And we need this because He is power in the right direction.  He enables us to live for God.

That’s why you see the Apostle Paul, right after he emphasizes good living to a group of people following Christ in Ephesus, say that we must be “filled with the Holy Spirit.”

That’s how change in our lives is accomplished.

He changes us.

We don’t change ourselves.

Be Filled With The Spirit

“So be careful how you live.  Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.

Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.

Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life.  Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,”

Ephesians 5:15-18

What we need to remember, is that when we have a “list” in the Bible describing what we are supposed to “do” or how we are supposed to act, that this can’t be accomplished without the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives.

If we “keep the list” through our own efforts, that only leads to pride.

We are to be continually filled

Our relationship with the Holy Spirit is continual and his work in our lives builds as we place ourselves under his control and influence daily.
