In Episode 019 – Pray About Everything my curiosity was really sparked by the whole idea of truly praying about everything.  I mean, I can be pretty selfish so I’m kind of assuming that praying for $50 Million isn’t exactly what Paul meant when he wrote this from his first century jail cell in Philippi.

That’s when I thought I had better find some examples of things to pray for.

That led to Colossians 1:9-10 and Episode 020 – Pray to Know God’s Will.  After all, Jesus tells us to ask according to His will, so it’s natural to seek to understand God’s Will.

Well this week I was reading the letter written by James the half-brother of Jesus.  In that letter he talks about trials and how they strengthen and complete us.  (James 1:2-4)

But then, right after James makes this point about dealing with trials, he immediately launches into a discussion about Praying for Wisdom.

Why does he do that?

That’s because we are to ask God for wisdom in coping with trials and not just deliverance from them.

Ouch!  I don’t know if I really like this, but I have to admit it’s true.

So when you’re confused, frustrated, can’t find relief in your situation and wonder if God even knows what you are going through:

Pray for Wisdom in Trials

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you.  He will not rebuke you for asking.

But when you ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God alone.

Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.

James 1:5-6

Don’t be afraid to ask.

  • Pray for Wisdom – and God will give it to you.
  • Don’t be embarrassed, God won’t fault you for asking
  • But ask in faith – choose who you believe, don’t be divided in your loyalty

That’s a lot to think about.  Are you like me and need to remind yourself often to pray for wisdom in trials?

Dear Brother Dan,

Greetings to you from India.

I found your podcast today and this verse has blessed my life. It gave me confidence to approach God during my trails and asking for wisdom to deal with it and also how I have to pray in everything according to His will, in faith. I have subscribed to the podcast and willing to memorize these life filled words with you. Thank you so much for taking time to explain the scriptures in context. Jesus bless you..

Heinrich, I am so glad to hear from you – in India! That’s what I love about New Media and the web – the reach is phenomenal. Thanks for joining me on this journey. Also, let me know if you have a favorite Bible Verse that you’ve been wanting to memorize. I could make it part of an upcoming Podcast. After all, we are serving Jesus together. – Dan
